The Winnipeg Wolves Basketball Club has announced they will be hosting
basketball camps for girls and boys going into grades 6, 7 and 8 next
year.
When: July 9-13 (Boys: 9:00-11:00 AM, Girls: 6:00-8:00 PM)
Where: St. John's-Ravenscourt (400 South Drive)
Cost: $125 for 5 sessions (Monday-Friday)
Players are asked to bring your own basketball and water bottle.
Coaches include:
Martin Riley (Boys and Girls)
A graduate of Sisler High School, Martin played his university
basketball at the University of Manitoba. While a Bison, he was named
CIAU Player of the Year in 1976 and an All-Canadian in 1976, '77, and
'78. One of the few players to make the Canadian National Team out of
high school in 1973, Martin was a member of the 1976 team that placed
fourth at the Montreal Olympics. He was captain of the 1980 Olympic
team. Martin also represented Canada at the 1974 and 1978 World
Championships, 1975 and 1979 Pan American Games, and the 1977 and 1979
World University Games. Martin has also been inducted into both the
Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame, the MHSAA Hall of Fame, Basketball Manitoba Hall of Fame, as well as the Canada Basketball Hall of
Fame. Martin is currently the head coach of the Wolves girls program
which and has been part of the Wolves program ever since he started it
in 2006. During those years with both the boys and girls program he had many teams win club provincials. Martin has over 35 years of
coaching experience, including at the University of Manitoba from 1981-84,
as well as at Miles Macdonell Collegiate, where he won 2 Varsity Boys Provincial
Championships, 4 consecutive KCAC Varsity Boys Championships, and was
named 1997 Varsity Boys Coach of the year. Martin has also coached many years at the JV and
Jr. High level.
Jonathan Janzen (Boys)
Jonathan graduated from the University of Winnipeg in 2015 after
studying Kinesiology and Applied Health while working towards earning
his education degree. He is currently a teacher in the River East
Transcona School Division and was worked with both middle years and high
school student. Jonathan was a member of the original Wolves graduating
class, coached by Martin Riley, and has now been part of the Wolves
coaching staff for over 7 years. He also coaches at the Varsity Boys
level and has been involved with the Miles Macdonell program for 7
years. This year Jonathan is also part of the Manitoba U15 Boys
Provincial Team coaching staff.
Paige Hastings Van (Girls)
Paige is currently completing her Kinesiology and Business and
Administration degrees at the University of Winnipeg. She has been part
of the Wesmen Woman’s CIS Basketball team and will be entering her fifth
year as team captain. Her time with the Wesmen has included winning a
Canada West bronze medal in 2016-17. Paige has been coaching since
graduating from Balmoral Hall which includes Athletes Initiative, Wesmen
Camps, River Heights and I Can Score.
Katie Hastings Van (Girls)
Katie is currently studying Kinesiology and Psychology through the
Education program at the University of Winnipeg. She has been part of
the Wesmen Woman’s CIS Basketball team for the past 3 years which
included winning a Canada West bronze medal in 2016-17. Katie has been
coaching ever since she graduated from Balmoral Hall High School, which
includes Athletes Initiative, Wesmen Camps, River Heights, I Can Score
and is currently part of the Manitoba 17U Girls Provincial Coaching
staff.
